Todd Phillip’s acclaimed Joker was full of moments and scenes that would become internet sensations, but the director revealed that he always knew the film’s earliest scenes would be a hit with fans around. Phillips’ film, which starred Joaquin Phoenic as the DC Comics main villain, reimagined the comic prince of crime, veered away from the criminal concept in order to stop Batman, and explored a makeup-wearing figure under it as the Joker, an incredibly popular character, became the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. It wasn’t dethroned by Wolverine and won 2 Oscars along with a Best Picture nomination.
Sitting down with Variet, Toss Phillips looked back at some of the most iconic scenes from his films. Many writers and directors admit that they never really know what stories fans will get involved with. However, during the conversation, Phillips said he knew his favorite line, “I thought my life was sad, but now I realize it’s a f**king joke, ” became a hit when he wrote it.
