“Jane Campion on Barbie’s Impact: ‘At Last, Women Will Be Trusted with Money'”
Greta Gerwig’s BArbie has simply become a cultural icon for young girls around the world; it has also been championed as a significant step forward for women filmakers, say acclaimed director jane Campion. Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie gave the iconic Mattel doll a completely original and hilarious story, where Barbie (Margot Robbie) and ken (Ryan Gosling) must travel from Barbyland to the real world, and it brought up the new fear the characters have developed of its death. In addition to upsetting far-right audiences with supposedly ‘hateful’ themes, it caused a box office hit in 2023, grossing over $1 billion.
Speaking to The hollywood Reporter, Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog, Bright Star and the Piano) said that Gerwig’s breakthrough in Barbie is an important step for female filmmakers. She believes Gerwig’s proven success in telling an original story with Barbie means “investing in trusting more female directors” rather than diving into the narrative pigeons of a major franchise like the MCU.
